Testing using IJS Protocol

Requirement, per family: 12 volunteer hours per year

Option to pay-out: $300 per year, per family

Effective for the 2022-23 skating season when you renew your club dues and register for ice, each skating member (family) will have a volunteer fee of $300 added to their account. To receive a credit for the $300 you will be required to volunteer a minimum of 12 hours per year or opt to pay the $300 per family. 

Each hour volunteered at Skate Detroit will triple in value.(i.e.:1 hour at Skate Detroit equals 3 hours, so 4 volunteer hours at Skate Detroit = your 12 hour total volunteer requirement.) 

You can also commit to donate food items (

) at least one week prior to Skate Detroit and receive credit towards your volunteer hours. Actual time allotted towards volunteer hours will be determined by donation and approved by the appropriate committee chairperson.

A combination of food donations and volunteer hours worked at Skate Detroit can determine your 12 hours.

If you cannot work Skate Detroit there are other opportunities throughout the year where you can complete your required 12 hour commitment.

Ice Show volunteering does not count towards your total hours, with the exception of tryouts in December.

A $300 fee will be applied annually to each member’s account at the beginning of each season (June 1 – May 31).

Proper validation of completed volunteer hours needs to be submitted to the main office (Marrianne Swift).

A $300 credit will be placed to the member’s account once volunteer requirements have been met.(Credits will not be pro-rated to any account with less than the required 12 hour minimum).

Volunteer

Tina is currently a Senior Manager in information technology. She works for Trinity Health, the second largest Non-Profit Catholic Health Organization in the country. She has been with the Trinity Organization for the past 30 years holding a variety of positions, including but not limited to, Project Manager, Business/Data Analyst, and Resource Manager. She is organized, efficient, and well versed in budgets, public speaking, and managing people and situations.

Tina has been married to her husband, Paul for 20 years. They now enjoy their own activities after raising their blended family of 6 children, Tina and Paul have 9 grandchildren whom they love to spend time with and spoil!

Tina is a very active member at DSC. She has served on the DSC Board for 3 years, the past two as Board President. She is an adult skater who has competed in both singles and synchronized skating. She practices, on multiple sessions, 5 days a week in the early morning hours before work. She has acted as the chairperson for the coach hospitality for Skate Detroit as well as the backstage manager for the DSC Annual Ice Show.

Kim is the Chief Academic Officer for a nonprofit organization specializing in charter school management with over twenty years of experience in education. Kim chaired the Nominating Committee, chaired the By-Laws Committee, and is currently the Board's Vice President and co-chair of the Strategic Planning Committee.

Kim understands the time and commitment it takes to support a scholar-athlete. Her son Ralph plays college basketball. Additionally, her daughter Kristina, a freshman at the University of Michigan, started skating in the Basic Skills program at DSC, spent three years competing with DSC's Evolution Synchronized Skating Teams, and is currently a part of Team USA for ice dance.

Biana lives in Waterford with her husband of 18 years, David, and daughter Isabella. She has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Oakland University and a Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Law. She has practiced law for the last 18 years in various different capacities. She was a shareholder at a law firm for 15 years where she specialized in creditor’s rights. She now works as General Counsel for a conglomerate of companies owned by one family.

Biana has been part of the DSC family since the fall of 2011 when her daughter, Isabella, started skating at the age of 4. Biana has been involved in every ice show since 2012. She was generally in the locker room helping all the children as her passion is working with children and helping them enjoy their ice show experience. For the last several years she has been a numbers chair for multiple numbers and helps assist the parents and children in making sure they have the best ice show experience. She has also assisted the rink in a number of roles including assisting in Team Olympic, DSC Learn to Skate Open Houses, and Skate Detroit. Over the years she has also assisted DSC with several legal issues and concerns.
Biana’s daughter Isabella, has skated at DSC for the past 10 years, starting in Learn to Skate Basic Skills program, competing in the freestyle program, and now is competing in Solo Dance figure skating. Isabella has participated in over nine DSC Ice Shows, the Detroit Winter Blast, and the 2019 Geico U.S. Figure Skating Championship Opening Ceremony and sweeping the ice after the performers finished their program. Isabella loves younger children and has been an active volunteer as a teen assistant in the Learn to Skate program at DSC for several years.

Kati and her husband Tim, live in West Bloomfield with their daughter Claire and three dogs. Kati and her family have been part of the DSC family for over 10 years. Kati is a Registered Nurse who has worked at the University of Michigan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, and Henry Ford Hospital. For the past eight years, she has run the health room at Claire’s elementary school (St. Hugo School), and she is currently working full time as the Covid Coordinator/office and health assist for St.Hugo.
Over the course of her years at DSC, Kati has been actively involved in many aspects of our club, regularly volunteering for many activities and events across many different areas and programs. She was the manager of the Evolution Synchronized Skating team for 6 years, during which time she not only handled the administrative aspects of the team but also helped with their annual auction and skating camp. She continued to assist Evolution with their competition forms and competition dresses even when her daughter did not skate for Evolution. Kati has been Chair of the Security Committee for the DSC Ice Show for the past 6 years. This position includes scheduling and managing all security and usher volunteers as well as handling all security-related issues arising during the performances and rehearsals. She also regularly assists with Ice Show tryouts and set-up. Her involvement with the Ice Show has given her the opportunity to meet and interact with parents and skaters at all levels of club involvement. Kati is also actively involved in Skate Detroit, and she has been the Chair of the Monitors/Runners Committee for the past 6 years. She served as Co-Chair of the DSC Monitors/Runners Committee for the upcoming 2019 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships.

Maria joined the DSC board in 2020. Her children began skating in the Learn to Skate program at DSC in 2005. They have participated in Tier 2 and Tier 3 hockey programs, figure skating, synchronized skating and the Detroit Skating Club’s annual ice show.

Maria has served on the Communications, Fundraising, Building and Membership committees for the rink. She also serves in a volunteer capacity on the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association district 4 council and on the Executive Committee for Adat Shalom Synagogue.

Amy lives in Southfield with her husband Darin and their two teen-aged sons, Gabe and Oscar. Gabe started in the DSC LTS program, competed in synchro with Evolution, is a three-time national competitor and two-time national medalist in ice dance, and is currently on tour with Disney on Ice. Oscar also learned to skate at DSC before turning his attention to music and theater. Amy has volunteered for many ice shows, Skate Detroit, and for Nationals.  Both Amy and Darin are life-long Michiganders with a love of the outdoors. They have been married for 25 years.

Valerie lives in West Bloomfield. She has been in the Healthcare and Information Technology field for many years. She has been very active in various volunteer roles during many events at DSC for over several years, including announcer, Coaches and Judges Hospitality, and many other positions too numerous to mention. In addition, she served as a member of the Nominating Committee for DSC Board of Directors and as Locker Room Committee Chair for numerous years including during the 2019 Geico U.S. Figure Skating Championships at Little Caesars Arena.

Valerie is a competitive skater and has had the opportunity to travel to many competitions over the years and meet amazing people from all over the world who have a passion for the sport. She had the honor of skating in 2019 Geico U.S. Figure Skating Championship Opening Ceremony. She enjoys skating and sharing that passion with other people. Her passion for skating was recognized and she was asked to teach at camps for Figure Skating in Detroit.

Pine has been a Resident member of the Detroit Skating Club for the past 16 years. Originally from Traverse City, Pine moved to Ann Arbor in 2005 to study at the University of Michigan and train at DSC. He was an active national-level competitor through 2009, participated in numerous DSC ice shows, and has served as an official of Skate Detroit since he retired from competitive skating in 2010. In 2014, Pine moved to the west coast to pursue his MBA and he now lives in Seattle, WA. Pine is a Strategy & Consulting Senior Manager (Junior Partner) at Accenture where he helps some of world’s largest companies reimagine their business functions and help them to be more resilient.
Pine has remained active in the skating community since his retirement and has a vested interest in ensuring DSC’s future. He holds national-level appointments as a Judge and Technical Panel Member, serves on multiple U.S. Figure Skating committees as both regional and sectional vice chairs, and is an active official at competitions and U.S. Figure Skating events across the US. Pine also served on the Strategic Planning Committee for the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors and created the latest 4-year strategic plan. Finally, Pine keeps strong ties to the Midwest and serves as the Chief Referee for annual Ann Arbor Springtime Invitational, among other competitions in Colorado, California, Oregon, Ohio, etc.
DSC was Pine’s 

 when he was learning who he was and where he wanted to be in his life. Many of his life-long friends are from the skating community and from his time at DSC – he hopes that this is the case for many generations to come.

Paula lives in Bloomfield Hills with her husband, Tim, and daughter Hope. She has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Electrical (BSEEE) from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Engineering, Technical Japanese (METJ) from the University of Wisconsin. She has worked in the engineering field for 30 years, holding various technical and project leadership positions in both Washington DC and Southeast Michigan. Her current role as Operations Support Engineer for the General Motors Aerodynamics Laboratory focuses her efforts on efficiency and customer support. She also is a Master Black Belt in Design for Six Sigma, an industry-recognized engineering and business management program.

When her daughter's enthusiasm for skating grew, Paula's involvement at DSC grew as well. She has been the Chair for Quick Change for the Ice Show for the past 5 years, and was on Costume and Charity Table committees as well. She also volunteered in several different roles for Skate Detroit over the past years, from selling programs, to Ice Monitor, and helping in the Volunteer Hospitality room. She also assisted for several days at the 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championship. Paula ran the Used Skate and Apparel sale for two years. She also assists with DSC Learn to Skate Open Houses.

Paula has been a member of The Village Club of Bloomfield Hills Membership Committee, as well as Chair of the Bourbon Club. She has participated in organizing and hosting several Village Club events as well.

Additionally, Paula has participated in the Adult Learn to Skate program over the past three years. She enjoys skating and is enthused with the number of different skating programs DSC offers to all ages and skill sets.

In Spring 2022 we started the Project Zamboni Fundraiser to help us raise money to purchase a new zamboni. We are currently at $50,000 - almost halfway to our new goal of $110,000*

*This goal was adjusted from our original goal due to the purchase of another zamboni from an area rink which saved us $40,000.

Axel3 Club

Detroit has been selected as the first city in a planned national expansion of the 20-year-old Figure Skating in Harlem program model, the only organization in the world for girls of color that combines the life-transforming power of education with access to the artistic discipline of figure skating.

In 1910, Detroit skaters enjoyed gliding across the frozen lakes and rivers surrounding Belle Isle as well as at a small artificial rink at the General Necessities Corporation downtown.  As a group of local skaters grew more dedicated, and the sport’s popularity grew across the nation, it was apparent that a more modern rink was warranted.

As a result, David Brown established the first modern ice rink in the Detroit area and quickly thereafter Gladys Salsinger organized a figure skating club. However, once World War I broke out, the arena was closed by government orders.

After the War was over, some local enterprising young men built the “Olympia Stadium” and Mrs. Salsinger, formed the new “Olympia Skating Club.”

The Olympia Skating Club held carnivals, featuring the outstanding amateur skaters of the time, including Sonja Henie, Pierre and Andrea Brunet, and Papez and Swack. But due to their fast decreasing ice time, the group was forced, once again, to reorganize.

In 1946, the members purchased a facility, previously used to house the horses of automotive magnate Charles T. Fisher, and call it home. In 1949 the club changed its name to “The Detroit Skating Club, Inc.”

As the club grew in size and stature, many Olympic and World Champions trained there. The expanding world of figure skating demanded a larger facility, and in 1978, the club took the opportunity to move to its present location in Bloomfield Hills. With the completion of an Olympic size rink 1994, the facility boasts three ice surfaces as well as off-ice training and locker rooms.

The Detroit Skating Club is one of only a handful of clubs in the United States that continues to own and operate its own facility.

Throughout the years, many National and Olympic-level skaters trained at DSC.  Included in this list are Gary Visconti and Tim Wood in the 60s, along with Doug Ramsey, who perished in the 1961 U.S. World Team plane crash; Melissa Militano and Johnny Johns (Pairs) and Johns and Mary Karen Campbell (Dance) in the 70s; 90s members Todd Eldredge, Nicole Bobek, Team Elan, Tara Lipinski, Danielle and Steve Hartsell (Pairs), Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow (Dance); Jessica Joseph and Charles Butler (Dance), Jamie Silverstein and Justin Pekarek (Dance), Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev (Dance); 2000s included Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto (Dance), Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev (Dance), Alissa Czisny, Jeremy Abbott, Meryl Davis and Charlie White (Dance), Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker (Dance).

As proud as we are of our history, we know the best is yet to come.

The History of the Detroit Skating Club

The purposes of the Detroit Skating Club, Inc., (“DSC”) are set forth in Article II of the DSC’s Articles of Incorporation.

The following words and phrases, wherever capitalized, shall have the following respective meanings, unless the context otherwise requires:

The term “Board” or “Board of Directors” means the Board of Directors of DSC, and the term “Director” means an individual member of the Board.

The term “Code” means the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, or comparable provisions of subsequent federal tax laws.

The term “DSC” means the Detroit Skating Club, Inc., a Michigan nonprofit corporation.

The terms “Hockey Members” or “Hockey Membership” have the meanings set forth in Article II, Section 4.

The terms “Life Member” and “Life Membership have the meanings set forth in Article II, Section 5.

The term “MAHA” means Michigan Amateur Hockey Association.

The term “Memorial Fund” has the meaning set forth in Article VIII.

The terms “Resident Members” or “Resident Membership” have the meanings set forth in Article II, Section 2.

The term “U.S. Figure Skating” means the United States Figure Skating Association.

The term “Skating year” refers to a 12-month period starting June 1 and ending May 31st or as otherwise specified by the U.S. Figure Skating.

The term “Secretary” shall mean the Secretary of DSC 

 the Recording Secretary of the Board of Directors.

Approved by the members means a simple majority of those present who are qualified to vote unless otherwise specified.

The term “Michigan Act” shall mean the Michigan Nonprofit Corporation Act, as amended.

The principal office of the DSC shall be located at 888 Denison Court, in the Township of Bloomfield, County of Oakland, State of Michigan, or such other place as may be designated as the principal office by the Board of Directors.The DSC also may have offices or branches at such other place, both within and without the State of Michigan, as the Board of Directors may determine from time to time or as the business of the DSC may require.

The registered office of the DSC shall be maintained in the State of Michigan, and may be, but need not be, identical with the principal office in the State of Michigan.The address of the registered office may be changed from time to time by the Board of Directors.

Section 1.CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP, FEES AND ANNUAL DUES

(a)The classes of membership shall include (i) Resident Membership, (ii) Life Membership, (iii) Hockey Membership and (iv) such other classes of membership as may be determined by the Board of Directors.

(b)The Board of Directors shall periodically set such fees and annual dues for each class of membership as it determines in its discretion; provided, however, that the dues shall be uniform within a class of membership for like privileges (but dues may not necessarily be equal as between classes); and provided, further that there shall be no dues for Life Membership.

(c)The persons otherwise eligible for membership shall be eligible regardless of race, religion, national origin or gender.

(a) Family Resident membership is defined as a family membership for a husband and wife as defined and recognized in the state where the individual was married and includes individuals in a common law or same sex marriageplus any children under the age of twenty-five (25).Family Resident members over 25 years of age shall be entitled to vote and be eligible to hold any DSC office or be elected to the Board of Directors.

(b)Individual Resident membership eligibility is applicable to any person at least eighteen years of age. Individual Resident members shall be entitled to all privileges of the DSC.Individual Resident members over 25 years of age shall be entitled to vote and be eligible to hold any DSC office or be elected to the Board of Directors.

(c)A son, daughter or ward of a current Resident Member who reaches twenty-five (25) years of age and has maintainedmembership under his or her Family’s Resident Membership may purchase an individual Resident Membership and still maintain their current position on the membership roster.

Any Resident Member who has been a Resident Member for a period of twenty-five (25) cumulative years and has attained the age of sixty (60) years shall be eligible for Life membership.Life Members shall be entitled to vote and be eligible to hold any DSC office or be elected to the Board of Directors.Resident Members, when eligible for such membership, must apply for such membership by written request to the Board of Directors.

Any person who is a member of (a) MAHA and (b) a hockey team that uses DSC’s facilities as its home or principal ice-skating rink, shall be eligible for a Hockey Membership.Hockey Members shall not be permitted to vote, hold office or be elected to the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors may create and bestow such other membership upon such persons for such periods and under such conditions and with such privileges as the Board may determine from time to time.Such members shall not be entitled to vote, hold office or be elected to the Board of Directors.

Section 6.APPLICATION FOR RESIDENT MEMBERSHIP

(a)All Resident Membership applications to DSC shall submitted be in writing.The application must be accompanied with appropriate payment and all required fees.If an applicant is a member of another U.S. Figure Skating Club the applicant shall be required to have the appropriate documents from applicant’s prior club in order to designate DSC as their home club with U.S. Figure Skating.

(b)It shall be the duty of the DSC Secretary to determine if the Resident Membership application is properly submitted. The Secretary shall timely submit all Resident applications to the Board of Directors Each Resident Membership must be approved by a majority vote by the Board ofDirectors prior to any Resident Membership applications becoming active.

(c)If a Resident Membership applicant is rejected by Board ofDirectors the applicant may reapply for membership at the next Board Meeting following a three (3) month waiting period.

Neither a membership nor any of the rights and obligations of a membership may be assigned, transferred or delegated.

Section 8.TERMINATION OR SUSPENSION OF MEMBERS

(a) Any and all DSC Memberships may be permanently terminated by voluntarily submitting a resignation in writing to the Secretary employed by DSC, provided that all indebtedness to the DSC has been paid.

Ice Show

Theatre On Ice (TOI) is a form of competitive figure skating that combines the grace of figure skating with the excitement of theatre and dance. Known as “Ballet on Ice” in Europe, TOI teams consist of eight to 24 skaters on the ice telling a story together. TOI brings skaters together and increases club skaters, giving athletes the chance to be a part of a team, travel locally and internationally and make new friends.

Learning to skate at DSC is for everyone! 

 Our Learn to Skate program is for snowplow skaters (age 3-5), basic skills skaters (all ages),  teens and adults too!  Our coaches specialize in teaching quality technique at all levels--some of our coaches have even coached at the Olympics!  From Learn to Skate, we guide our skaters into more programs at DSC including Learn to Play Hockey, Aspire Skating Academy, Synchronized skating, competitive skating, recreational programs, and more!

Membership
All LTS skaters at The Detroit Skating Club are required to be members of the Learn to Skate USA. These fees are included in your Detroit Skating Club memberships as described below. If you are changing from another USFSA Club, please do so before or at the time of registration. We will assist you in the office. Representing The Detroit Skating Club is not mandatory for your membership. You may join several clubs, but only one may be designated as your Home Club.

Trial lessons available upon request through the Learn to Skate Manager only. Trial lessons must be scheduled in advance and subject to availability. Trial lessons are for one time only, and are $25 and are to paid at time of class.

Learn to Skate

As a nonprofit organization, The Detroit Skating Club relies on sponsorships and advertising to offset our operational costs for our building as well as program costs for Learn to Skate, Learn to Play, figure skating, hockey and activities and programs for our community. As a sponsor, you can reach thousands of skaters, players, and spectators who visit the rink regularly each year.

Adults

The Detroit Skating Club was one of only 11 global entities (and the only one in North America) that earned the ISU Centers of Excellence (CoE) label for the four-year period from April 2022 to April 2026.

An ISU CoE is an ISU-recognized skating entity that provides an overall environment of high-quality facilities, skating services, coaching and training activities, research and innovation, servicing high-performance and long-term development of Skaters, Coaches, Officials, and experts while engaging with multiple ISU Members.

Fred's Skate Sharpening is an independent service specializing in figure skate sharpening, blade mounting and analysis of skate-related problems. Located in the Detroit Skating Club. World, Olympic and National Skaters and Champions and have depended on his services for predictable perfection.

DSC will be hosting an in house LTS/Aspire competition for our members. We want this to be a fun event that will provide our newest skaters with the opportunity to experience the thrill of competition!

The best way to improve as a skater is to consistently attend off-ice classes! We have an amazing off-ice staff!

Off-Ice

The Aspire Skating Academy is a year-round opportunity for Learn to Skate skaters to further develop their skating skills in a group setting. Instruction will be provided by our DSC Resident and Learn to Skate staff. On-Ice class sizes will be limited to 5 or fewer skaters. This is a great opportunity for young athletes and their families to learn what it means to be a figure skater. 

Skaters will continue working on skills in LTS but will also learn skills that will begin to bridge them into the many other skating opportunities and programs that DSC has to offer.

This is also a great opportunity for anyone looking for private lessons to work with several different coaches before deciding on a head coach.

Will include:
15 minutes Skating Skills - Semi Private - 15 minutes Spins or Jumps - Semi Private - 15 minutes Intro to Moves or Stops & Tricks - Semi Private

On-Ice Instruction

Will include:
30 minutes Dance class, Stretch class or Strength & Conditioning class

Off-Ice Instruction
